Formation

Native gold forms in hydrothermal quartz veins, where hot, gold-bearing fluids deposit metal as they cool within fractures in the host rock.

A gold-in-quartz specimen is a small, dense object best displayed close, where the interplay of metal and stone can be read.

Significance

Gold occurs in nature chiefly as the native element. Specimens where visible gold remains intact within its host quartz — rather than extracted — are comparatively rare and prized.

Crystalline and wire golds, and rich gold-in-quartz matrix pieces, are collected as mineral specimens in their own right.

Value rests on the quantity, form, and visibility of the gold, and on the aesthetic contrast with the white quartz.
