Every specimen we keep was made by forces almost beyond comprehension — oceans of pressure, the slow heat of a young planet, crystals growing atom by atom across spans of time we can barely imagine. Some are hundreds of millions of years old; a few reach back billions. To hold one is to hold a fragment of the earth's own memory, shaped long before us and enduring far beyond.
