Why Humans Collect Natural Objects

Long before the museum, there was the cabinet of curiosities — a private room where the wonders of the natural world were gathered, ordered, and admired. Shells, minerals, fossils, and corals sat side by side, evidence of a world far larger than any single life.

The impulse is older still. People have carried stones for as long as there have been people. Not for power or magic, but for the simpler reasons we still recognise: that an object can hold a memory, mark a moment, or simply be beautiful enough to keep.

To collect is to pay attention to the world and to choose. It is a way of saying: this, out of everything, is worth keeping near.
